Crown Hill National Cemetery in Indianapolis held a dedication ceremony on July 1, unveiling the new Columbarium built by Hagerman and our partner Nora Contracting out of Detroit, Michigan. A columbarium is a room or building with small niches that house cremation urns. The dedication was for the Phase I expansion for the cremated remains of over 3,400 veterans of central Indiana. At the completion of subsequent phases, the 15 acres of ground will house the remains of over 36,000 veterans.
Founded in 1863 on the near north side of Indianapolis, Crown Hill is the third largest private cemetery in the nation, with over 200,000 burials on 555 acres. In 1866, the Federal government purchased 1.37 acres of the land to create a United State National Military Cemetery, one of four today in Indiana maintained by the Department of Veteran Affairs.
Hagerman self-performed the concrete work for the $11.3M project. This included the concrete foundations, slabs, sidewalks, and approximately 28,000 square feet of pervious concrete sidewalks.
